A busy business isn't always a growing one. Here's how to tell the difference before the year gets away from you.

The calendar says we’re officially halfway through the year, which is a little hard to believe. It’s also the perfect moment to do something most agents put off: have an honest conversation about how the year is actually going.

Back in January, most of us set goals. Maybe you wanted to close more transactions, take more listings, or finally get consistent with lead generation. Maybe this was going to be the year you broke through to the next level. So now that we’re sitting here in the middle of it, the question worth asking is simple. How is that actually going?

Don’t wait until December. We don’t ask that in a negative way. One of the biggest mistakes agents make is waiting until the end of the year to evaluate how it went, and by December, it’s far too late to do anything about it. Right now is different. You still have six months to make adjustments, and you still have time to finish the year strong. But that only works if you’re honest with yourself about where you actually are today.

Most agents have a clarity problem. Something we’ve learned over the years is that most agents don’t have a work ethic problem. They have a clarity problem. They’re working hard, answering calls, showing homes, writing contracts, and running from one appointment to the next. But when you ask them what’s actually driving their business, they aren’t always sure. They know they’re busy. They just don’t know if they’re busy doing the right things. That distinction matters because being busy doesn’t automatically mean you’re building a better business.

Know where your deals come from. If we were sitting down with you over coffee today, one of the first questions we’d ask is this: Where have your deals come from so far this year? Not where you hope they’ll come from or where you’d like them to. Where have they actually come from? Past clients, referrals, open houses, your sphere, online leads? When you know where your business is coming from, you know where to double down. And when you know what isn’t working, you know what needs to change.

“Most agents don’t have a work ethic problem; they have a clarity problem.”

Picture December if nothing changes. The other question we’d ask is this: if you keep doing exactly what you’re doing right now, what does the end of your year look like? Sit with that for a second. If nothing changes between now and December, are you going to hit your goals? Would you be happy with that outcome? If the answer is yes, that’s great, keep going. But if the answer is no, the solution probably isn’t just working harder.

It’s getting more intentional. Maybe you need a better follow-up system, more accountability, stronger listing skills, or more time spent prospecting. Maybe you need to get around people who are doing the things you’re trying to do. Whatever it is, now is the time to figure it out, not three months from now and not at the end of the year.

This market rewards those who adapt. This matters even more right now, because let’s be honest, this isn’t the same market we were working in a few years ago. Consumers need more guidance, listings require more strategy, and buyers need more education.

The agents who are succeeding right now aren’t necessarily the ones working the hardest. They’re the ones adapting the fastest. They’re improving their skills, sharpening their systems, staying coachable, and making adjustments when they need to. That’s why the middle of the year is such a valuable checkpoint. Not because it’s a report card, but because it’s an opportunity to look at what’s working, fix what isn’t, and make sure the next six months are better than the first six.

So if you haven’t done it already, block out 30 minutes on your calendar this week. Look at your numbers, your pipeline, and your goals, and ask yourself what needs to change between now and December. Six months from now, you’re going to wish you had started today.
